Discussion, analysis, and the exchange of views aimed at the conception and implementation of a new “high strategy” are more important than ever. The changes taking place in the international environment and their implications for Greek foreign policy, as well as for stability and security globally and particularly in the Eastern Mediterranean region, require the mobilisation of all forces that could contribute to a better analysis of developments, the formulation of policy proposals, and their translation into concrete action.

The Observatory of Geopolitics and Diplomacy constitutes a new strategic initiative of the Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy (ELIAMEP), aiming to systematically analyse international and regional transformations that affect Greece’s position, power footprint, and strategic choices.

In an international environment in which multilateralism is receding and geopolitical uncertainty is increasing, the Observatory aspires to contribute to the shaping of a modern “high strategy” for Greek foreign policy, through evidence-based analysis and applicable policy proposals.

Since its establishment, ELIAMEP has played a significant role in the generation of ideas, as well as in public debate and the exchange of views on national strategy, the country’s European trajectory, and its relations with key allies. The current juncture makes discussion, analysis, and the exchange of views in search of new and innovative approaches to critical challenges more necessary than ever.

This effort will be strengthened through the active participation of a new generation of scholars who, in cooperation with ELIAMEP’s experienced and highly qualified staff, will study major international transformations and contribute to the formulation of realistic policy proposals.

The Observatory will focus on key areas of strategic importance, such as the Eastern Mediterranean, relations with the Middle East, transatlantic relations, energy, and emerging global actors. Particular emphasis will be placed on linking research with public debate and the policy-making process, as well as on supporting young scholars through a fellowship programme.
