The Mediterranean is a broad geopolitical area of intense challenges.
The Southern Mediterranean, an immediate neighbour of Greece and Europe, is an unstable region, a locus of intensifying power competition, producing persistent old and new security threats, a geographical area bound to be affected severely by climate change, competition for scarce resources, migratory flows, and demographic dislocation.
The Mediterranean is also an area of high interdependence though limited connectivity and untapped cooperation opportunities.
Apart from analyzing the risks and challenges, ELIAMEP’s Mediterranean Programme will seek to develop a positive agenda in approaching the Mediterranean through the lens of connectivity. Inter- and intraregional connectivity is key to tackling the region’s challenges, realizing its potential, and shaping its future.
ELIAMEP has a long tradition of interest in the region, being part of various important regional partnerships and networks, such as EuroMeSCo. ELIAMEP’s newly launched Mediterranean Programme, also building on the work of the Mediterranean Growth Initiative (MGI), seeks to consolidate the Foundation’s involvement, expertise, and influence in the region.
