About us

The Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy (ELIAMEP) is an independent, non-governmental, nonprofit think tank, established in Athens, Greece, in 1988.

Its mission is to conduct policy-oriented research and provide policy makers, academia and the public at large with authoritative information, analysis, and policy recommendations, for the development of evidence-based responses to major European and foreign policy challenges.

ELIAMEP is committed to excellence, open dialogue and policy deliberation, research, training and any other undertaking that falls within its spheres of interest.

ELIAMEP promotes pluralist democratic values; a rational level-headed public debate on the major regional, European and global challenges; the resolution of disputes through dialogue; Greece’s European and Euro-Atlantic commitment.

Distinctions

Based on international rankings, ELIAMEP is one of the leading think tanks at the regional, European and international level. In 2020, it ranked No.1 think tank in Greece, out of a total of 57 Greek think tanks, in the “2020 Global Go To Think Tank Index Report” by the University of Pennsylvania. It also ranked 49th in the “Best Think Tank Network” worldwide category.

A few years earlier, in 2017, ELIAMEP had also received the Academy of Athens award as an acknowledgement for its long-standing contribution in the public sphere.

Other important distinctions:

  • ELIAMEP was the first institution in Greece to host a research programme funded by the European Research Council (ERC) in the field of Social Sciences.
  • It was ranked among the top 5 institutions in Greece (including major Greek universities) to be awarded the highest number of projects and funding in Socio-Economic Sciences and the Humanities from the 7th Framework Programme of the European Commission.
  • ELIAMEP’s 12th European Seminar held in 2015 on “The EU and its Discontents – Time for a New Grand Bargain?”, was selected as a “success story” by the European Commission.

 

Activities & Networks

ELIAMEP

  • Participates in over 35 projects with an experienced but steadily renewed team of researchers
  • Undertakes various information and awareness-raising activities to promote public debate, such as publications, social media, conferences, training seminars and round-table discussions
  • Collaborates with a wide network of 300+ key stakeholders in all areas of its expertise, in Europe and worldwide (government institutions, the NGO community, the media, universities and research centres, grant-making foundations, the private sector, etc.)
  • Has been publishing a detailed account of its activities in its Annual Reports since 2006. These include summaries of the main research activities, events, publications, networking, partnerships, fundraising and other actions implemented as part of ELIAMEP ’s annual work programme.
  • Is an active member of several international networks, such as:New Pact for Europe, Open European Dialogue, Euro-Mediterranean Study Commission (EuroMeSCo), Arab Reform Initiative (ARI), European Policy Institutes Network (EPIN), European Expert Network on Culture and the Audiovisual (EENCA), EU Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Consortium (EUNPD), OSCE Network of Think Tanks and Academic Institutions, OSCE Expert Network; Europe’s People’s Forum (EPF), European Cyber Agora, European Security and Defence College, Think Tank Network on the Eastern Partnership, Schuman Network, Transatlantic Periscope, United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) and Ignita.
