The Hellenic Foundation for European & Foreign Policy (ELIAMEP) hosted on March 10, 2025, a closed event on “Shaping Fairness in the EU Music Ecosystem: The role of EU law and policy.” The event highlighted key findings from the FairMusE project on how EU policies can help shape a fairer, more transparent, and sustainable music ecosystem.

The event opened with a welcome address by Evangelia Psychogiopoulou, Assistant Professor at the University of the Peloponnese and Senior Research Fellow at ELIAMEP, who briefly presented the FairMuse project, emphasizing the importance of fairness in the EU music industry. Giuseppe Mazziotti, Abreu Professor in Law and Innovation at the Católica Global School of Law and FairMusE Project Coordinator, then presented key project findings on the role of EU law in protecting creators’ rights. He specifically focused on the Directive on Copyright and Related Rights in the Digital Single Market (Directive 2019/790), with special attention to the national transpositions of Article 18. Next, Eirini Volikou, Research Fellow at the Universidade Católica Portuguesa and the University of Tartu discussed how competition law and enforcement, as well as platform regulation can contribute to strengthening authors’ and performers’ rights. The event concluded with a presentation on diachronic conceptualisations of fairness in EU law and policy related to the music sector by ELIAMEP researchers Apostolos Samaras and Anna Kandyla.

The event provided a platform for insightful discussions and knowledge exchange, underscoring the steps needed to foster a fairer and more transparent music ecosystem in Europe.
