On 10 December, ELIAMEP co-organized a high-level event at the European Parliament in Brussels under the S&D Group’s Willy Brandt initiative. Entitled “Europe’s Expanding Power: How Enlargement Reinforces the European Union”, the discussion took place within the framework of ELIAMEP’s think nea – New Narratives of EU Integration initiative, which is supported by OSF-WB.

Georgi Gotev of the Brussels-based media outlet EUalive attended the event and highlighted that Dr Ioannis Armakolas and Dr Ana Krstinovska, both representing ELIAMEP, argued that EU enlargement is still shaped by outdated perceptions and called for a renewed narrative that highlights what Western Balkan candidates can contribute to the Union, including in areas such as defence and economic security. Referring to the think nea reports, Dr Krstinovska pointed to existing capacities and resources in the Western Balkans that could enhance Europe’s strategic resilience, while also acknowledging persistent challenges relating to environmental concerns, limited value-added production, and external economic dependencies. Addressing issues raised by MEPs from the S&D group, Dr. Krstinovska underscored that the initiative seeks to showcase credible, mature projects and broader industrial potential rather than promote a transactional approach.
