The second episode of the “REACHing Citizens” podcast series—part of the “Reshaping Engagement through Affirmative Citizen Consultations (REACH)” project launched in 2024 and funded by the European Commission’s SAV 2023 program—brings together organizations from across Europe to explore pressing social and political issues. In this episode hosted by Ioanna Giakoumopoulou and Nikos Tsapas, the focus shifts to Greece, where two young participants, Emilia and Homere, share their insights during a recent citizen consultation.

With dual French and Greek backgrounds, Emilia and Homere provide thoughtful perspectives on topics such as climate change, EU enlargement, and the rule of law. They discuss the notable differences in environmental education and awareness between Greece and France, highlighting how systemic barriers in Greece—like inadequate city infrastructure and social stigmas—impede the adoption of eco-friendly lifestyles among young people. The duo also reflects on the unexpected, fear-driven responses they encountered during discussions on EU enlargement, touching upon concerns related to security, economic instability, and the influence of military power within the EU, as well as the complex power dynamics arising from dual national identities.

In addition, the episode explores the realm of artistic expression. Emilia and Homere examine how, despite the theoretical protection of free speech, social and political pressures often lead to self-censorship among young artists in both France and Greece. They underscore the privilege inherent in artistic expression and the unequal opportunities for voices to be heard.

Overall, the episode emphasizes the importance of open dialogue and education on critical issues. Emilia and Homere encourage young people to actively engage in discussions and consultations, challenge dominant narratives, and advocate for meaningful change.
