This study written by Dr Evangelia Psychogiopoulou examines the integration of cultural considerations in European Union (EU) law and policies, also known as cultural mainstreaming, in accordance with Article 167(4) of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU), with a view to respecting and promoting cultural diversity. The analysis starts with a discussion of the cultural mainstreaming requirements imposed on the EU institutions. It then explores the application of Article 167(4) TFEU. In doing so, it reveals two distinct phases in the accommodation of cultural concerns in EU action. Whereas the first phase discloses piecemeal cultural mainstreaming attempts on behalf of the European institutions, the second phase is characterised by a renewed EU interest in cultural mainstreaming.
