On Tuesday, June 30, 2026, a roundtable discussion entitled “Boosting European Competitiveness and the Single Market: Priorities Ahead of the Greek Presidency of the Council of the EU” took place in Brussels, at the Permanent Representation of Greece to the EU. The event was co-organised by the Permanent Representation of Greece to the EU and ELIAMEP.

The Permanent Representative of Greece to the EU, Ambassador Ioannis Vrailas, delivered the opening remarks. The discussion that followed focused on the future of the Single Market and its role within the EU competitiveness agenda, also in view of the Greek Presidency of the Council of the EU in the second half of 2027. Particular attention was paid to the persistent obstacles that continue to limit the full functioning of the Single Market.

The discussion also addressed the “One Europe, One Market” roadmap, the debate on the so-called “28th regime” and the “EU Inc.” proposal as a possible tool for supporting cross-border business activity. The exchange of views highlighted areas where deepening the Single Market is considered critical, as well as the creation of a more favorable environment for European businesses.

The event was held under the Chatham House rule. The discussion was moderated by Professor Spyros Blavoukos (AUEB), Senior Research Fellow at ELIAMEP (Head of the ‘Ariane Condellis’ European Programme), who also set the context for the key questions regarding European competitiveness and the deepening of the Single Market. Dr. Apostolos Samaras, Research Fellow at ELIAMEP (European Programme ‘Ariane Condellis’), focused his framing presentation on key contemporary challenges facing the Single Market and on the debate surrounding the “28th regime” and “EU Inc.”

Participants included representatives of EU institutions, Member State Permanent Representations, business organisations, research institutes, with expertise in the Single Market, competitiveness and European business activity. The Deputy Permanent Representative of Greece to the EU, Ambassador Efthymios Costopoulos, presented the key conclusions of the discussion.
