The National & Kapodistrian University of Athens and the Hellenic Foundation for European & Foreign Policy (ELIAMEP) are co-organizing a two-day Conference on:

“50 years of Democracy and the Armed Forces – What Lies Ahead?”

The conference will be held on 28-29 January 2025, at the main building of the University of Athens (A. Argyriadis Amphitheater).

The Conference will explore a wide array of topics pertaining to the evolution of the Armed Forces since Greece’s democratic transition fifty years ago, as well as future challenges to the mission and effectiveness of the Armed Forces through the prism of the civil-military relations. This is the first time that such a Conference is organized tasked with shedding light on the development of civil-military relations and with providing an appraisal (understanding and explanation) of the post-dictatorship legacy within the Armed Forces. By doing so, it aims to identify possible methods of improving the effectiveness of the Hellenic Armed Forces, rendering them capable of rising to the challenges of a constantly changing international environment, defined by ‘poly-crises’.
