Dr Efthymios (Akis) Papastavridis is a Researcher and Part-time Lecturer at the Faculty of Law of University of Oxford, and Oxford Martin Fellow at the Oxford Martin School, University of Oxford. He participates in the Oxford Martin Programme on Sustainable Oceans, an interdisciplinary project involving the Faculty of Law, the Department of Zoology, and the School of Geography and the Environment of University of Oxford and funded by Oxford Martin School. Dr Papastavidis also teaches at the Faculty of Law. He offers undergraduate (FHS) lectures and tutorials in Public international Law, as well as seminars in International Law of the Sea and International Law of Armed Conflict at the BCL/MJur programme. He supervises one MPhil and two DPhil students (with Professor Catherine Redgwell).

Dr Papastavidis is also Research Fellow at the Academy of Athens and Senior Fellow at the Athens Public International Law Center, University of Athens. He was formerly Expert Counsellor on Public International Law at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Greece (2016-2019); Part-time Lecturer at the Faculty of Law, Democritus University of Thrace (2010-2016) and Post-doctoral Fellow at the Faculty of Law, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (2012-2015).

Dr. Papastavridis has read law at National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and University College London. In 2009 he was awarded a PhD in Public International Law from University College London. He has taught international law at various Universities, including the University College London, Westminster University, Democritus University of Thrace, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, University of Piraeus, and the University of Oxford. He has consulted the UN Office on Drugs and Crime on transnational organized crime at sea and the UNHCR on questions concerning rescue at sea. He is currently consulting the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (FRONTEX) on international law of the sea matters. In 2012 Dr Papastavridis was the Director of the Centre for Research Studies of The Hague Academy of International Law.

Dr Papastavridis is the author of three monographs, including The Use of Force in Afghanistan under International Law (Athens 2004), Interception of Vessels on the High Seas (Hart Publishing, 2013), The Protection of Shipping from Transnational Organized Crime (Athens, 2015); co-author of Public International Law Concentrate (Oxford University Press, 2013); editor of two collected volumes; and author of several chapters in books and numerous articles. He has recently signed a contract with Oxford University Press for a monograph under the Oxford Monographs on International Law Series on ‘Fisheries Enforcement and Marine Biodiversity under International Law’.
