Although many believed that the Oslo Accords (1993) would finally resolve the Palestinian issue, one of the most significant problems of the latter half of the 20th century, that peace process would run aground, unfortunately, like all those that followed it at the start of the 21st century. Which is how we arrived at a new explosion of violence in October 2023, with thousands of dead and wounded and almost 2,000,000 persons displaced. We must approach the Israel-Hamas war in the broader context of this confrontation. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is one of the longest-running in the Middle East, and the Palestinian issue has long been a factor feeding into instability and violence which threatens both regional and international security. The Strategic Terms Index is a lively, up-to-date sourcebook that can help us understand the long-term timeline, recent developments and, most importantly, the strategic factors that have shaped the Arab-Israeli conflict since 1947.
The Index by Triantafyllos Karatrantos, ELIAMEP Senior Research Fellow, is an updated and expanded version of the ‘Short dictionary’ of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict prepared by Thanos Dokos and published in June 2010. Stefanos Kontogiannis and Antonia Koumpoti contributed to this updated version.
