Triantafyllos Karatrantos
Senior Research Fellow, Radicalisation, Terrorism, Policing Models, Security and Foreign Policy tkaratrantos@eliamep.grDr Triantafyllos Karatrantos was born in Athens on November 1982. He is an International Relations, European Security and New Threats expert. He is a Research Fellow in Radicalization, Terrorism, Policing Models, Security and Foreign Policy at the Hellenic Institute for European and Foreign Policy (ELIAMEP) and Senior Advisor on Radicalization, Organized Crime and Terrorism Research and Prevention Policies at the Center for Security Studies (KEMEA). On September 2021, he was appointed by the European Commission to the Advisory Board of Researchers charged with researching and developing the policy for preventing radicalization and countering violent extremism for the RAN – Policy Support.
He is also a postdoctoral researcher on Polarization & the Prevention of Radicalization and Violent Extremism at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, and lectures at the National Security School of Greece on Multiculturalism, Migration and Security; Intercultural Policing and Community Policing; and Radicalisation and Terrorism.
He holds a Ph.D. in European Security and New Threats from the University of the Aegean. Since 2014, he has working at the Center for Security Studies (KEMEA) on training programs and European and research projects. He is also a RAN-certified COE trainer in Radicalization, a member of the RAN LOCAL Group, a CEPOL network expert, and a specialized trainer on polarization, radicalization, multi-agency cooperation and FTF’s common identification indicators.
Since 2005, when he was awarded his first European grant from the Youth Program as a member of a youth group, he has actively coordinated and participated in the implementation of twenty-three (23) European and research projects (HORIZON 2020, ISF- Police, AMIF, ERASMUS+, DG JUSTICE, EDF). Recent years have seen him focus on training programs for first-line practitioners, especially short courses for Law Enforcement personnel on radicalization and counter-terrorism, and on conducting research into security planning, terrorism and violent extremism, security sector reform, policing policies and models, states and the new security environment, European security, and linkages between security and foreign policy.
He has published two books with Epikentro Publications and co-edited one with Vasilis Vamvakas and Panagis Panagiotopoulos. He has also contributed seventy-five (75) chapters to collective volumes and journals in Greece and abroad and written, or participated in the writing of, fifteen (15) policy and working papers.
Between July 2019 and August 2021, he served as a Security Policy Advisor to the Minister for Citizen Protection. He has been a Security Policy Advisor to the Minister of State since September 2021.
