On 16 March 2025, ELIAMEP President Loukas Tsoukalis participated in the 8th annual conference of the Circle of Ideas for the national reconstruction conference, titled Ellada Meta VIII: Europe, Greece, and the storm of new challenges.

In the first session, The Storm of Developments, Mr. Tsoukalis spoke with journalist Yannis Paleologos about the geopolitical impact of Donald Trump’s return to the U.S. presidency, focusing on its implications for Europe and relations with Russia. He highlighted Trump’s stance toward the EU, viewing it more as a competitor than an ally, and described his approach as one of “shock and awe”.

Trump’s statements and his adversarial attitude toward key allies, such as Ukraine, have raised deep concerns—particularly in Central and Eastern European countries that have long relied on U.S. protection. With that protection no longer guaranteed, discussions on strategic autonomy and a common European defense have gained new urgency.

Meanwhile, Vladimir Putin has repeatedly warned of Moscow’s “red lines”, especially regarding NATO’s expansion into Ukraine and Georgia. Looking ahead, the EU will not only need to oversee Ukraine’s reconstruction but also navigate its long-term relationship with Russia once the war ends.
