Dr. Triantafyllos Karatrantos participated as a keynote speaker at the Seventh Annual Edition of the ECTC Advisory Network Annual Conference organised by EUROPOL, with the presentation entitled: Youngsters in the Cycle of Organised Crime and Violence and the Risk of Radicalisation and Extremism”.

On 21 and 22 April, more than 200 experts from law enforcement authorities, policymaking bodies, industry and academia from EU Member States and partner countries gathered to discuss the evolving challenges of terrorism and violent extremism in Europe.

Under the thematic focus: Terrorism Post-Ideology: (Counter-)Terrorism in a Multi-Crises World”, the 7th annual ECTC Advisory Network Conference explored how violent acts are increasingly blurring into terrorist offences, as well as the implications of this development for the future of counter-terrorism policies and their intersection with other areas of law enforcement.

In his intervention, Dr. Karatrantos focused on the growing involvement of young people in cycles of organised crime and violence, highlighting the phenomenon as a critical social challenge with far-reaching implications for community safety, social cohesion and democratic stability.

Particular emphasis was placed on the intersection between organised crime, radicalisation processes and extremism. As he underlined, young people who become embedded in violent environments are often more vulnerable to extremist ideologies, since criminal structures:

  • normalise violence,
  • reinforce mistrust towards institutions,
  • and create pathways for ideological manipulation.

At the same time, it was stressed that these dynamics are reinforced both offline and within digital ecosystems, where recruitment and propaganda increasingly target younger audiences through online platforms and social media networks.
