On March 11-12, Dr Sophia Clément Mavroudis, Senior Research fellow on Defence at Eliamep, attended the Centre for European Reform (CER) Chatham House rules Working Group on “Rearming Europe: Short-term Priorities and Policy Options”.

Representatives from ministries, embassies, and leading European think tanks took part in the discussion. They addressed critical questions such as European governments’ building and maintaining public support for defense spending in rearmament. How to achieve European procurement and capability development through building blocks, identifying priority and capabilities, time scales as well as costs, to address fragmentation and duplication and ensure large scale production. And lastly how to ensure recruitment and skilled forces, hence the link between the army and society.

In her intervention, Dr Clément Mavroudis examined how European governments can ensure sustained increases in defense spending in the context of rearmament, and how Europe can advance effective joint procurement and capability development in order to secure large-scale production. She also highlighted Greece’s experience in the Eastern Mediterranean and the country’s significant recent defense reforms.
