Senior Research Fellow at ELIAMEP, Evangelia Psychogiopoulou has contributed a chapter titled: ‘Cultural Heritage and the EU: Legal Competences, Instrumental Policies, and the Search for a European Dimension’ to Cultural Heritage in the European Union: A Critical Inquiry into Law and Policy, a book edited by A. Jakubowski, K. Hausler and F. Fiorentini (Brill, 2019).
Dr. Psychogiopoulou’s chapter deals with the way in which cultural heritage is construed at the EU level. It offers a survey of the EU actions in cultural heritage pre- and after the Treaty of Maastricht. From this survey, a clear picture of the instrumental uses of cultural heritage by the EU institutions arises. After Maastricht, in particular, this instrumental use of cultural heritage has been potentiated and diversified with a view of exploiting the socio-economic benefits of cultural heritage in a large number of policy areas – not confined to culture.
