The Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy (ELIAMEP) is organising a seminar for secondary school teachers on Monday, 1 December, from 15:00 to 17:00 at ELIAMEP’s premises (Vasilissis Sofias 49, Athens).

Many would say that defence and the welfare state are two inversely proportional policy fields. In simple terms, as resources allocated to defence increase, the resources available for the welfare state decrease. However, there is also the view that defence and the social dimension of the European project are two sides of the same coin. More specifically, in an era of multifaceted threats facing the EU, the concept of “total defence” is becoming more important than ever. It encompasses the preparedness and readiness of the Union, its member-states, the private sector and society in general to deal with a wide range of threats. In total defence, a strong, resilient and prepared society forms the base of the pyramid for dealing with any form of malicious activity. Total defence begins as early as the first grades of primary school in some countries.

The draft agenda of the seminar includes a basic presentation of the concept of total defence, which is inextricably linked to society and education. The presentation is supplemented by examples of good practices adopted in other EU member-states as well as in third countries.

The aim of the seminar is to introduce educators to the concept of total defence so that they can understand the key role they can play in the Union’s and Greece’s preparedness. The seminar will be attended by young people with an interest and/or background in EU affairs, in order to strengthen intergenerational dialogue on an issue that affects society as a whole.

The seminar will be held in Greek and in a hybrid format to allow teachers from all regions of Greece, as well as from Greek schools and Greek language departments abroad, to participate.

You can find the seminar’s draft agenda here.

Pre-registration is required due to limited space. The registration form can be found here.

Certificates of attendance will be awarded upon completion of the seminar.

The workshop is held as part of the EPACE-EU (Enhancing Public Awareness and Civic Engagement in the European Union) project, which is co-funded by the European Union.
