The lecture by Eirini Sifaki, “From the Movie Theatre to the Culture of Streaming: Shaping Habits and Preferences of Young People in Greece”, held on 7 May 2025, examined the transition of the cinematic experience from the public space of the movie theatre to the private and digital realm of streaming platforms. Through the research project REBOOT, the first findings were presented regarding the film-watching habits of young people in Greece (ages 12–24), with a focus on their preferences, selection criteria, the role of social media and algorithms, as well as their relationship with European cinema.
The research highlights trends such as the dominance of streaming services, the individualization of viewing, the absence of systematic film education, and the need to enhance access to European productions and collective viewing experiences. The lecture concluded with a broader reflection on the future of cinema as a cultural space of memory, encounter, and creative imagination.
