Jens Bastian looks at the rhetorical question “What if?” in relation to international politics and how it can be used to analyze contemporary economic, social and defence challenges. By way of example, he uses Konrad Adenauer, the first Chancellor of West Germany, to consider how historical figures might respond to the political debates of our present day.
