Following the publication of his policy brief “A Mediterranean Duel: Erdogan, Sisi and the Fate of Egyptian-Turkish Relations” for ELIAMEP, and the policy brief “Between cooperation and containment: New U.S. policies for a new Turkey” for the Brookings Institute, and prior to the publication of his new book The Remaking of Republican Turkey: Memory and Modernity since the Fall of the Ottoman Empire in 2021, Nicholas Danforth gave an interview to the Kathimerini newspaper in which he explains that: “For a long time, people in Washington thought that if you were nicer to Erdogan, that would improve relations with Turkey. This was not the case”.
