On 16 April, Ioannis Alexandris appeared on ERT News Radio 105.8 to discuss the outcome of Hungary’s elections and their broader implications for the EU.

He highlighted that the result was largely driven by economic fatigue, high inflation, stagnant wages and growing public frustration with corruption scandals, which enabled Péter Magyar to mobilise a broad and diverse electorate.

Alexandris noted that the new government is expected to prioritise rule of law reforms and anti-corruption measures, both to deliver domestically and to unlock approximately €18 billion in frozen EU funds, with relatively swift action anticipated.

At the EU level, he underlined that Hungary is likely to adopt a more constructive stance, potentially lifting its veto on the €90 billion Ukraine aid package. However, he cautioned that this will not amount to full alignment, as Budapest is expected to maintain firmer positions on migration and remain cautious on Ukraine’s fast-track accession.

This analysis feeds into ELIAMEP’s THINK-NEA project, which examines the evolving dynamics of European integration, including through a dedicated workstream on how domestic political developments in EU member states shape the trajectory of EU enlargement.
