Dr Michalis Kritikos points out that, just as May Day has historically symbolized struggles against invisible forms of labour exploitation, a new form of “invisible” work now surrounds Artificial Intelligence. Because, despite the apparent autonomy of AI systems, their operation actually relies on complex, multi-layered chains of human labour—from data curators and annotators to workers on micro-task platforms—who contribute to the training and reliability of AI models while remaining largely unseen.
