Following the victory of Andrej Babis’ ANO party in the Czech general elections, Ioannis Alexandris (Research Fellow, South-East Europe Programme – ELIAMEP; Research Associate, think nea – New Narratives of EU Integration) analyses the potential implications for the EU’s enlargement agenda and the broader political balance within the European Council.
The article explores how Prague’s traditionally proactive stance on EU enlargement could evolve under a more Eurosceptic leadership, the role of coalition dynamics in shaping Czech foreign policy, and the risk that “enlargement fatigue” may spread eastward amid growing fiscal and political sensitivities across Europe.
The piece draws on insights from Alexandris’ research under ELIAMEP’s initiative think nea –New Narratives of EU Integration which is supported by the Open Society Foundations –Western Balkans.
