Ioannis Alexandris, Research Fellow at the South-East Europe Programme of ELIAMEP, was a guest of Maria Psara in the Euronews show “Brussels, I love you?”. The panel also included George Georgiou, AKEL MEP from Cyprus and member of the Left Group in the European Parliament, and Alia Papageorgiou, President of the Brussels Press Club.
The programme focused on three key issues: the rise of the far right in Germany and Europe, Donald Trump’s expansionist ambitions and the EU’s space strategy. In Germany, thousands of protesters took to the streets of Berlin to express their opposition to the new anti-immigration bill, which was passed with the support of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. With the 23 February elections approaching, the country’s political scene is at a critical juncture, with potential implications for the rest of Europe.
At the same time, the show analyzed Donald Trump’s first moves after his return to the White House, which have already caused a stir. His statements about US control of Greenland and Gaza have sparked international reactions, with France saying it is ready to intervene militarily to protect Greenland. The question is how Brussels will respond to the new geopolitical challenges, both at the European and international level.
In the discussion on Germany, the upcoming elections and the strengthening of the AfD, Ioannis Alexandris referred to the new initiative of ELIAMEP’s South-East Europe Programme, think nea – New Narratives of EU Integration. Particular mention was made of the report entitled “The rise of radical right and Eurosceptic political forces and the impact on the EU’s enlargement policy“, which examines the recent electoral victories of radical right-wing parties and analyses how these parties are reshaping the political landscape of the EU, particularly with regard to the EU enlargement agenda.
