In this podcast, produced in the context of the outreach activities of Europe Direct ELIAMEP Attica, we are joined by Professor Spyros Blavoukos, Head of the “Ariane Condellis” European Programme, to discuss political developments in Hungary in the wake of Viktor Orbán’s electoral defeat after 16 years in power.

We ask whether this outcome represents a victory for liberal democracy, or whether it is still too early to draw firm conclusions, particularly in light of the rise of Péter Magyar. We also examine whether, and to what extent, Hungary’s stance may change within the European Union, as well as how such a shift could impact key debates—including the potential transition from unanimity to Qualified Majority Voting in foreign policy and defense.

Finally, we situate the Hungarian case within the broader European context and ask if this is an isolated political upset, or a harbinger of a broader pro-European resurgence against populism and Euroscepticism?
