Vasilis Petropoulos is a foreign affairs analyst with five years of progressively responsible international experience in academia, think tanks, NGOs, and the private sector. Currently, he works as a Researcher/Manager at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies in Washington (CNS), DC contributing to the implementation of DoD and State Department-funded projects on great power competition with a focus on economic interdependence, strategic trade, export controls and sanctions evasion. He is also working with the Director of the CNS Middle East Program, Dr. Chen Kane, on China’s role in the Middle East and particularly on the China-Iran relations after the October 7 attack and the subsequent outbreak of war between Israel and Hamas.
In the past, Mr.Petropoulos has held various roles in research and policy analysis including, among others, in the Europe Department of the International Crisis Group in Brussels, where he worked on the Cypriot Issue as a member of the Turkey Foreign Policy analysis unit; in the MENA Department of the Berghof Foundation in Berlin supporting the research on the Yemen conflict and on post-Bouteflika Algeria; and in Duco Experts in Washington DC providing insights on European politics. Further, in May 2024, Mr. Petropoulos was selected by the Greek Embassy in Washington DC to represent Greece at the first-ever NATO Youth Summit, which took place on July 8-10 on the sidelines of the NATO Summit in Washington DC. He was one of the co-authors of the first-ever NATO Youth Declaration.
Mr. Petropoulos holds a Master’s degree in Law and Diplomacy (MALD) from the Fletcher School at Tufts University in Boston, graduating in the top 1% of his class with specialization in international security, great power competition in Eurasia, and conflict resolution. During his time at Fletcher, he worked as Professor Chris Miller’s (author of Chip War) teaching assistant contributing to the curriculum of his classes on US Foreign Policy and Russian Foreign Policy. Mr. Petropoulos also has a Bachelor’s degree in International, European, and Area Studies from the Panteion University of Political and Social Sciences.
He is a published author of numerous articles on international relations. His work has appeared in prestigious outlets, such as Foreign Affairs, Foreign Brief, the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, the Warsaw Institute of Geopolitics, Hellas Journal, and the greek newspaper Ethnos. Currently, he is a contributor in the english edition of the greek newspaper To Vima, a Wall Street Journal publishing partner.
