Dr Maria-Louiza Deftou is a Teaching Fellow at the School of Law of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and a researcher at the Athens Public International Law Center (AthensPIL). She holds a PhD from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and an LL.M. (Master 2 Research) in Human Rights Law from Université Lumière Lyon 2. Her research focuses on international law, particularly international human rights law, migration and refugee law, and the protection of human rights at sea, and she has published extensively in these fields.

Dr Deftou is the author of the monograph Exporting the European Convention on Human Rights (Hart Publishing, 2022) and a member of the International Law Association Committee on the Protection of People at Sea. She has also participated in several EU-funded and nationally funded research and teaching projects focusing on migrants’ rights, data protection, and the application of human rights in the maritime context.
