On Thursday, 22 January 2026, at 12:00 pm (EET), an online discussion took place as part of ELIAMEP’s series of short, one-hour online conversations, Crises in Focus, focusing on the crisis in Venezuela.

Christopher Sabatini, Senior Research Fellow for Latin America at Chatham House Royal Institute of International Affairs, gave an insightful presentation on Venezuela’s political and institutional crisis moderated by Elena Lazarou, Director General of ELIAMEP

The discussion began with a concise overview of the situation in the country, followed by an analysis of the main political, economic, and international factors that led to the removal of President Nicolás Maduro. It then examined the relations of the President of the United States, Donald Trump, with Latin American countries, focusing on the strategic directions and intentions of U.S. foreign policy, as expressed in official statements.

Special attention was given to the potential impact of these developments on intra-regional relations in Latin America and on the future political landscape in the near term. The online session concluded with questions from participants, which focused, among other topics, on the role the European Union could potentially play in Venezuela.

Crises in Focus is a new series of one-hour online conversations shedding light on some of today’s most pressing global crises. Featuring leading international experts, each session focuses on a specific case study and explores its political, social, and geopolitical implications.

The discussions follow an “in conversation” format, bringing together an external expert and a member of ELIAMEP in a dynamic and engaging dialogue.
