Dr. George Dikaios, Senior Research Fellow at ELIAMEP and Marie Curie Individual Postdoctoral Fellow at Leiden University, delivered a lecture at the Institute of Mediterranean Studies of FORTH on the topic: “The climatization of maritime transport policy at the international and European level”.

Over the past decade or so, the fight against climate change has become a burning topic of the international shipping agenda. At the level of the International Maritime Organization and the European Union (EU), this has led to a series of negotiations, which have proven to be particularly complex and their results -usually- are not encouraging in terms of the implementation of any commitments. The lecture presented the institutional framework within which the discussion on the climatization of maritime transport began and is evolving, and emphasized the role of the EU, both in relation to the development of a climate-friendly European maritime transport policy, and in relation to its influence at the international level on this issue.
