In the second episode of [OVER]VIEWS by Decode39 on “Geopolitics vs Merit: The EU’s New Enlargement Dilemma”, Dr Isabelle Ioannides, Senior Fellow at ELIAMEP, pointed out in a blog entitled “Treading a fine line between geopolitics and merit” that EU enlargement has always been about geopolitics, more so today. Nevertheless, if the merit-based approach which will remain at the centre of the enlargement process, is fully applied (especially on rule of law), even hesitant Member States can be convinced to support accession. The convergence of these two factors, in addition to the fact that small new members can accede to the EU without changes to the existing Treaties, could allow for limited enlargement to become a reality by 2030.
[OVER]VIEWS by Decode39 is curated by Dr Valbona Zeneli, Senior Fellow at the Atlantic Council. It presents a series that delves into emerging questions about European, transatlantic, and global geopolitical issues. Each edition delivers expert insights from leading voices in international affairs making Decode39 the go to source for today’s thought leadership professionals. Decode39, which is a spin-off project stemming from Formiche, a leading geopolitical and analytical news outlet that has been informing Italian decision-makers since 2004.
