Dr. Ioannis Armakolas, Head of the Wider Europe Programme at ELIAMEP and Director of ELIAMEP’s initiative think nea – New Narratives of EU Integration, was one of the speakers at the event titled “From Environmentalism to the Demand for Democracy: The ‘Flamingo Movement’ and Its Political and International Implications for Albania” which was organized by the Institute of International Economic Relations.
The event focused on the recent protest movement in Albania, which emerged in response to the proposed tourism investment by Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner and evolved from environmental activism into broader demands for democratic governance. It examined the movement’s impact on Albania’s political system and domestic power dynamics, as well as the country’s position in the changing geopolitical landscape of the Western Balkans and the prospects for its European Union accession process following the EU’s latest regional initiatives.
