ELIAMEP is organizing its annual European Seminar in Athens, 13-16 May 2010. At this critical year, we aim at bringing together leading thinkers, policy-makers, academics and researchers to discuss the political and social consequences of the global economic crisis for Europe; to examine the Union’s key political choices ahead particularly as regards labour market and taxation policies and the wider domestic and EU political implications of this crisis; and debate whether Europe requires a new grand bargain in the post-crisis world.

Call for Papers

The Conference Academic Committee welcomes original contributions on the following themes and topics from young researchers (PhD and Post Doc researchers are particularly welcome):

  • Europe and the global crisis: How did European Welfare States react? Lessons from the crisis

How did the EU and its member states respond to the global economic crisis? Did the safety nets work? Where, how and for whom? To what extent and in what ways were European policy makers able to handle or address the social consequences of the crisis? Was the EU up to the challenge? How effective is/ was EMU management?

  • Losers and Social Contracts : the Political Dimension after the Crisis

It is often argued that Europe is partly responsible for the breakdown of the social contract. What are the effects of the costs of the crisis on a disintegration that has pre-dated the crisis? If resentment towards the EU has been growing over the last decade on behalf of ‘perceived’ or ‘real’ losers from the process of European integration, then has the crisis consolidated euro-scepticism in the EU member states? What are the implications of declining public/electoral support in political terms? What strategies are European political elites adopting as (some) political parties risk losing/weakening their electoral basis if their pro-EU rhetoric continues, while other political parties widen and strengthen their basis as a result of their anti-EU or Euro-sceptic rhetoric?

  • Globalisation, European Integration and Social Europe – perceptions and reality

In which way and to what degree is globalization affecting the domestic national social contract? How is the current financial economic crisis affecting the European social model? What role for Europe in redefining a social contract relevant in the 21st century? Is there a need to seek alternative models of capitalism in the European Union?
