The Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy (ELIAMEP) is hosting a roundtable discussion on: Europe’s AI strategy: challenges and the way forward.

Recent advancements in the field of artificial intelligence promise massive economic and productivity benefits, while at the same time raising fundamental questions about the future across a variety of dimensions, from the economy, the labour market, education and skills, to geopolitics, balance of power, and warfare, including the possibility of loss of human control over technology. For the EU, the challenge is existential: according to some of the worst scenarios, lagging behind the US and China exposes the EU not just to enduring relative economic decline (growing less than other economies), but to a bleak future of absolute impoverishment, social strife, economic and security dependence, strategic vulnerability, and eventually loss of sovereignty in the face of military aggression. Should this risk be taken seriously, or dismissed as tech hype? And, if the former, what can Europe – at national and EU level – do to avert it? Our roundtable discussion brings together experts from academia, industry, and policy making, to explore what needs to be done, whether it can realistically be done, and how.
