On 3 December, ELIAMEP’s Director General, Dr. Elena Lazarou, participated in the Strategic Council Meeting of the European Policy Centre (EPC) , held alongside the EPC Annual Conference, both under the theme “Liberal Democracy Under Threat”.
The Strategic Council Meeting brought together EPC leadership, senior analysts, and invited experts to debate how Europe can safeguard liberal democracy amid rising populism, geopolitical tensions, and global fragmentation. Dr. Lazarou served as first respondent in the session on Europe in the World, addressing the strategic question:
“How can Europeans bring back and secure peace in Europe and shape a foreign policy that stands up against a world of transactionalism, ‘might is right’, and weak global institutions?”
In the afternoon, the EPC Annual Conference convened top policymakers, diplomats, and thought leaders—including European Commissioner for Democracy Michael McGrath and Executive Vice-President Teresa Ribera—for a fast-paced discussion on renewing trust, defending democratic values, and countering disinformation. Breakout sessions explored critical issues from migration and social policy to climate resilience and enlargement.
