Dimitri A. Sotiropoulos gave a seminar at the Hellenic Observatory of the London School of Economics on Wednesday 11 March 2026. The title of his seminar was “Democracy and Independent Authorities in Greece: Checks and Imbalances”. His main research question why the independent regulatory and administrative authorities in Greece, that were initially established to regulate selected policy sectors independent of partisan concerns and to balance the power of the executive, have eventually been unable to fulfill their mission. He interpreted the paradox with reference to the long-term lack of political trust of citizens in institutions, the negligence of successive governments to provide the authorities with adequate resources, and the dynamics of polarized political party competition in Greece between the mid-1990s and today.
