The GLOBSEC US–Europe Forum 2026, organized by GLOBSEC in Washington, D.C. on February 26, convened policymakers, diplomats, analysts, and business leaders from both sides of the Atlantic to discuss the evolving state of transatlantic relations amid mounting geopolitical and economic pressures. ELIAMEP participated as a partner of the event and was represented by Dimitris Tsarouhas, Senior Research Fellow, based in Washington DC.

Discussions focused on the need to reinforce the transatlantic partnership in the face of strategic competition with China, the ongoing war in Ukraine following Russia’s invasion, and growing concerns about economic security and technological leadership. Speakers highlighted the importance of maintaining unity between the United States and European Union while addressing divergences on industrial policy, trade measures, and defense burden-sharing. Several participants emphasized that the resilience of the transatlantic alliance will depend on improving coordination in strategic sectors such as energy, critical infrastructure, and emerging technologies.

Across the sessions, participants argued that the transatlantic relationship is entering a period of adjustment, rather than full-scale decline. While disagreements remain on issues such as industrial subsidies, digital regulation, and the modernization of economic frameworks, there was broad consensus that geopolitical realities require deeper cooperation. Speakers called for more structured dialogue on economic security, particularly regarding supply chains and technology governance, as well as continued support for Ukraine’s defense and reconstruction. European speakers were keen to stress the importance of strategic autonomy within a cooperative transatlantic framework, while U.S. representatives underlined the need for Europe to assume greater responsibility for regional security. The Forum ultimately underscored that sustained political commitment on both sides of the Atlantic will be necessary to manage tensions, while preserving the strategic foundations of the long-standing transatlantic partnership.
