Ronald Meinardus writes about a project that set out to acquaint young people from Germany and Greece with their controversial shared history. “Tracing a Shared History” was the title of a week-long German-Greek youth exchange held in late August in Vitsa, a picturesque mountain village about a half-hour’s drive from Ioannina. Bringing together participants from the two countries, the programme aimed to explore complex and often painful chapters from their shared past, foster dialogue, and build mutual understanding through workshops, site visits, and personal encounters. The programme led to a deeper awareness of historical memory, but also to a meaningful connection between two generations shaped by different, but intertwined, narratives.
