Dr. Isabelle Ioannides, Senior Research Fellow at the South-East Europe Programme of ELIAMEP, authored the article titled EU enlargement and the Western Balkans’ long and winding accession path, published in the special issue of IDEES entitled The Balkans at the Crossroads, edited by Dr. Ioannis Armakolas and Dr. Ruth Ferrero.

The article examines the EU’s enlargement policy and the complex accession process of the Western Balkans, emphasizing the gap between political commitments and actual progress. It argues that, despite the renewed momentum following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the path to membership remains uncertain without stronger political will, credible reforms, and institutional accountability — both from the EU and the candidate countries.
