Dr Elena Lazarou explains why the U.S.-Iran talks in Islamabad have brought a less visible, but nonetheless extremely critical dimension of international politics, back into focus: the power of mediation.

Dr Lazarou points out that, in a world in which conflicts are multiplying but direct channels of communication are often cut off, states that are able to “talk to everyone” acquire an influence disproportionate to their size.
