Dimitar Bechev, Senior Research Fellow at the South-East Europe Programme of ELIAMEP, wrote an op-ed for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty’s discussing the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. This article is part of Bechev’s monthly column at RFE/RL’s Bulgarian service.

In his article, Bechev points out that despite initial Russian expectations of a swift victory, Ukraine’s successful resistance has prolonged the conflict. While Russia holds some advantages in resources, Ukraine’s strategic gains and Western support suggest a potential shift in the balance of power in Ukraine’s favor by next year. However, challenges persist, including a shortage of ammunition for Ukraine and economic strain on Russia due to military spending. Putin’s hopes for a favorable outcome may hinge on American politics, with uncertainty surrounding Biden’s aid package and the potential return of Trump to the White House. Amidst these uncertainties, the ferocity of the war in Ukraine continues.
