Dimitar Bechev, Senior Research Fellow at the South-East Europe Programme of ELIAMEP, wrote an op-ed for Carnegie Europe which delves into Montenegro’s EU accession prospects.

Bechev analyses Prime Minister Milojko Spajić’s efforts to align with EU standards, particularly in judiciary and rule-of-law reforms. Despite past doubts, recent political shifts, like the rise of the centrist Europe Now Movement, offer cautious optimism in Brussels. However, internal divisions, nationalist influences, and varying EU priorities pose significant hurdles. Successful accession would signal Montenegro’s commitment to Western values and bolster the EU’s credibility in the Western Balkans amidst global competition.
