Kifissia, the suburb in the North of Athens, recently became the venue of a discreet meeting of representatives from Syria’s embattled political camps and ethnic and religious groups in yet another effort to talk about peace and reconciliation in the war-torn country. Some twenty members of “The Council of the Syrian Charter”, a group set up in 2016 representing members of Syria’s civil society, judges, lawyers, leaders of the country’s most influential tribes, religious scholars and former politicians, met behind closed doors for three days of internal deliberations and also high-level interactions with the Greek government and political experts.  Following similar meetings in Madrid, Berlin, Paris and Vienna, the organizers now chose Athens for their important gathering. ELIAMEP’s Mediterranean Program assisted in the logistical and political preparations of the meeting – and, in the end, invited Giorgios Tsiaras, international editor of “Efimerida ton Syntakton”, for exclusive interviews with the guests from Syria.
