“It’s a Package Deal! Reforming and Enlarging the European Union in a Contested World” | Publication – Isabelle Ioannides

Dr. Isabelle Ioannides, Senior Research Fellow at the South-East Europe Programme, co-authored with Nikola Dimitrov, Zoran Nechev and Oana Popescu-Zamfir the analysis “It’s a Package Deal! Reforming and Enlarging the European Union in a Contested World” which was published by the Institute for Human Sciences (IWM).

The analysis examines the repercussions of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on the European Union’s strategic landscape, highlighting the need for unity and reform in response to growing geopolitical competition. It suggests implementing qualified majority voting in decision-making and adopting a phased-in approach to enlargement, emphasizing the importance of upholding democratic values while preparing for a future EU that is resilient and adaptable to emerging challenges.
