In the context of the European Project APPRAISE (fAcilitating Public & Private secuRity operAtors to mitigate terrorIsm Scenarios against soft targEts), the Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy (ELIAMEP) has organized on Thursday 13 July 2023, a workshop titled: “New technologies for the security of public spaces from terrorist attacks. Ethical and legal restrictions for ensuring the protection of privacy and the citizens’ rights and freedoms.

The aim of the workshop was the implementation of a Co-creation procedure about APPRAISE Technologies. The participants (citizens, researchers, young scientists, members of the EU Youth Hub), after a detailed presentation of the APPRAISE concept and the main technological tools, engaged in an active dialogue and provided their feedback based on their experiences on two main discussion pillars:

1.       Are APPRAISE tools and solutions constitute effective responses to public spaces protection? Are there any specific comments and/or recommendations regarding the tools and technologies?

2.       Are there any risks or limitations on privacy, freedoms, access, and protection to public spaces which may appear due to the use of APPRAISE tools and technologies? What are the most prominent examples in this regard? Are there any specific recommendations regarding measures for the mitigation of risks?

Dr. Lilian Mitrou, Professor at the Department of Information and Communication Systems Engineering, University of the Aegean and President of the Institute for Privacy Law, Personal Data and Technology was the keynote speaker at the workshop.

The keynote presentation was followed by a discussion among the participants of the workshop with project researchers Eirini Keremidou and Triantafyllos Karatrantos acting as moderators of the discussion.
