Jelena Džankić, Senior Research Fellow at the South-East Europe Programme of ELIAMEP and Part-Time Professor in the Global Governance Programme at the Robert Schuman Centre of the European University Institute in Florence, participated in the EP-EUI high-level conference titled “Enlarging and Deepening the Union: What’s at stake for the EU and EU citizens in the next parliamentary term?”.

Professor Džankić was one of the speakers at the panel on expectations for the enlargement process in the years 2024-2029 and benefits for EU citizens alongside MEP David Mcallister and MEP Petras Auštrevičius.

This collaborative endeavor between the European Parliament and the European University Institute sought to engage in a comprehensive dialogue, bringing together esteemed academic experts and policymakers to scrutinize the European Parliament’s recent propositions. Against the backdrop of the forthcoming European elections, participants explored the Parliament’s latest stances on enlargement, as delineated in its resolutions on the Common Foreign and Security Policy and on Deepening EU integration. Moreover, the conference coincided with the release of the Commission’s communication on pre-enlargement reforms and policy reviews, strategically positioned just weeks ahead of the 20th anniversary of the 2004 enlargement, offering a poignant occasion to evaluate the manifold benefits of enlargement for EU citizens.
