Ioannis Armakolas, Senior Research Fellow and Head of the South-East Europe Programme, spoke in the context of the EMBRACE research project on the issue of EU democracy promotion and the developments in global politics. Dr. Armakolas explained how EMBRACE takes into account the impact of global political developments on the EU’s democracy promotion efforts.
The research project EMBRACE aims to respond to the counter-democracy trends after the colored revolutions and the Arab Spring. It does so through an inter-disciplinary, multi-method and cross-regional assessment of both blockages to and drivers of democratization in 12 case-study countries across Eastern Europe, Southern Caucasus, Western Balkans, Northern Africa and the Middle East.
