Born in London on May 3rd 1971, Yannis Triphyllis is a member of the 4th generation of the Gourdomichalis (&/Fatsis-Carras) ship owning and managing families on his maternal side and of the 3rd generation of shipowners on his paternal side. His grandfather Stathis Gourdomichalis was Chairman of the UGS and BoD member of National Bank of Greece, Olympic Airways and other companies. He is a graduate of Harvard University (Cum Laude in International Relations, class of ’94) and an experienced shipping executive with over 15 years of direct involvement in various shipping projects requiring technical, commercial and legal competence.
Apart from having served as a Director and been a Shareholder in his family’s firm, Gourdomichalis Maritime SA, he has served as the Managing Director of LydiaMar (part of the Aug. Bolten Group, of Hamburg), and as the intended CEO in the aborted Ariston Navigation Corp’s IPO attempt, on the NYSE, during 2013-14. He has earlier experience working in the fields of investment banking (Hill Samuel Bank, London), fund management (ErgoInvest SA, Athens), and venture capital (Syntek AG, Milan).
Currently a long standing member of the Executive Committee and BoD of the Hellenic Chamber of Shipping since (over 7,000 ships of various types and sizes), BoD of the UK Defense Club (abt. 4,000 cargo ships), Executive Committee of Intercargo (abt. 2000 dry bulk ships), BoD Seafarers Employment Agency, as well as the Foreign Affairs committee of the Union of Greek Shipowners (abt 800 cargo ships). He has also served several terms on the Piraeus Marine Club’s BoD since 2006 and was recently appointed to the Advisory Board of Eliamep, Greece’s foremost Foreign Policy independent Think Tank.
Between 2006-12 he served on the Harvard School of Public Health’s 10-member CII Advisory Board, under Dean Barry Bloom.
He has also served as a volunteer teacher in rural Zimbabwe’s Cheunje highschool.
