“The desire to break apart from Europe has been a gradual development that predates Trump. He just heightened it to the point of outright hostility. This hostility will surely lessen and the EU will find itself to be the US’ closest ally once more. This is essential for Washington in order to deal with Russia, and more so, China. Therefore, the Biden administration will have a Euro-Atlantic orientation, symbolically and practically. On the other hand, the EU must strengthen its strategic autonomy in order to construct a more equal relationship with Washington, especially after the traumatic Trump era,” said George Pagoulatos, Director General of ELIAMEP, in his interview with Vassilis Skouris.
