Professor Maria Gavouneli is taking over as Director General of ELIAMEP (Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy). She succeeds George Pagoulatos who, after three and a half highly successful years in the position, is leaving to become Permanent Representative of Greece to the OECD.

“We thank him for his important contribution to the Foundation and wish him every success in his new role”, said ELIAMEP President Loukas Tsoukalis.

Maria Gavouneli, an international law expert who has published extensively and has a great deal of experience in research project management and other fields along with a strong international presence, has the knowledge and experience to succeed as Director General of ELIAMEP, an institution with which she has been collaborating for many years already in the capacity of Senior Policy Advisor.

ELIAMEP is delighted to welcome its new Director General. Maria Gavouneli teaches at the Law School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and is a member of the Athens PIL Research Centre for Public International Law and Director of the University of Athens’ Centre of Excellence for Asylum and Migration.

She is President of the International Law Association – Greek Branch of the ILA and Vice President of the Hellenic Society of International Law & International Relations. She is also President of the National Human Rights Commission – EEDA, sits on the Board of the National Transparency Authority, and is a member of the National Accessibility Authority.
