“The President of the European Commission asked supervising Vice-President Margaritis Schinas and Commissioner Ylva Johansson to gather proposed modifications to the Pact from member states. Without getting into too much detail, the Pact wishes to strike a balance between the humanitarian values of the Union, the financial dimension of migration and asylum and how it relates to production, and the growing popularity of the ‘Fortress Europe’ sentiment among powerful politicians and other societal forces. Both sides reacted strongly to the Pact. The only thing certain is that if the European Council ignores these reactions, there will be consequences,” writes Antonis Trifyllis in his article for the Sunday edition of VIMA.
